This
year is the 100th anniversary of the National Park System. In
celebration of that, I've seen many guide books and wonderful (and
huge) photo books, but the one I selected for my blog is See
America: a Celebration of Our National Parks & Treasured Sites.
It is illustrated by the Artists of the Creative Action Network. As
part of Roosevelt's Work Projects Administration, artists were put to
work creating posters to teach and create interest in the new NPS.
In that spirit, and with the same goal, the See America
project was started with a generation of new artists. The results are
stunning! (A fun fact here: Robert Todd Lincoln, the only surviving
child of Abraham Lincoln, was at the dedication of the Lincoln
Memorial).
For
spectacular places closer to home than most of the National Parks,
you might want to consider what you'll find in The Seven Wonders
of Washington State: Your Guide to Exploring the Natural Wonders of
the Evergreen State, by Howard Fisk. It is obvious from both the
photos and the text that Mr. Fisk loved putting this book together!
